A decade of footsteps across South Africa's most remarkable landscapes
Dapper-cloud began in 2015 when a group of conservation biologists and mountain guides realised that truly experiencing South Africa's biodiversity required more than a quick drive through a reserve. It demanded slowing down, walking at nature's pace, and learning to read the landscape.
Our founding team had spent years conducting ecological surveys in remote areas, from the succulent karoo to misty montane grasslands. We knew trails that appeared in no guidebook and witnessed seasonal phenomena that most visitors never see.
What started as occasional guided walks for friends grew into a commitment to share these hidden corners of South Africa with anyone willing to lace up their boots and venture beyond the conventional.
We believe walking is the most honest way to meet a landscape. Vehicles create barriers between traveller and terrain, while walking demands engagement. You notice the texture of rock beneath your feet, the shift in air temperature as altitude changes, the subtle movement in undergrowth that signals unseen wildlife.
Every trail we offer has been personally walked by our team, not once but across different seasons and conditions. We know where the proteas bloom first in spring, which river crossings become challenging after rain, and where to pause for the view that makes the climb worthwhile.
Experts who transform a walk into an education
All guides hold accredited qualifications in wilderness guiding, first aid, and specialist fields including botany and ornithology. Continuous training ensures knowledge remains current.
Many of our guides grew up in the regions they now lead walks through. They carry stories passed down through generations alongside scientific understanding.
Comprehensive risk assessments precede every departure. Emergency protocols are rehearsed regularly, and communication equipment ensures connectivity in remote areas.
Walking lightly means more than technique
All groups follow strict principles to minimise impact on fragile ecosystems
Revenue supports community conservation initiatives and landowner stewardship programmes
We calculate and offset emissions from transport to trailheads through verified programmes
Observation distances and noise levels are carefully managed to avoid disturbing fauna
When you walk with Dapper-cloud, you are not simply purchasing a service. You are joining a community of people who believe that understanding nature requires immersion, that fitness comes from purposeful movement, and that memories formed on trails outlast any photograph.
We promise to share our knowledge generously, to prioritise your safety without diminishing adventure, and to reveal landscapes that will change how you see this country.
